A catenary system and an art installation are just two examples of the various projects they have worked on and regularly deliver.
Westfield Chermside Catenary System
In this project Tensile’s role was to provide the preliminary design and engineering, while, specialist tensile contractor Innovative Rigging undertook the final design, engineering, build and sign off of the structure.
The application’s challenges included physical site constraints, cable connection bracket location restrictions, along with the complexity of multilayering disks. Specialist design and expertise were required to accommodate the client’s conceptual design. From the initial design process through to final installation of the system, design challenges and site issues were able to be overcome, thereby ensuring the project was finalised to a standard that met the client’s brief.
‘Echo Orbit’, Brunswick Street Brisbane
Echo Orbit is a suspended art piece that combines sculptural form with shade, comprising of 155sqm of vibrant tensioned geometric aluminium plates.
Tensile provided early consultancy, design and engineering for the installation, working with both the artist and landscape architect (Place Design Group) to ensure integrity and stability of the piece.
The installation amassed over 1,400 lineal metres of varying diameters of structural cables supporting the artwork. Tensile supplied the load rated Jakob components required to adequately tension the cable net.
The main challenge was to create a functional yet buildable tensile art structure that conformed to all engineering requirements without compromising the original design intent. Innovative Rigging managed these challenges through meticulous planning and execution of the artwork from concept through to completion.
Both of these projects demonstrate what is possible when combining tensile construction with art and design.
