Outdoor green facades are subject to a range of natural elements and forces including rain, sun, wind, changing weather conditions and fluctuating temperatures, not to mention the passage of time.
Using stainless steel ropes, rods and mesh helps to create a stronger and longer-lasting support structure for a green facade. The Jakob range of products are made from 316-grade stainless-steel, which provides the strength, weather-resistance and durability required of green infrastructure – which can sometimes be dozens of storeys high!
Stainless steel ropes
Facade wire rope or cabling systems range in size from 1mm to 26mm and come in various configurations. They can be used in either single or multi-storey green facades to form a support structure for climbing or twining plants.
The cables need to be strong enough to carry the weight of the plants and materials, not only at installation stage, but also later as the plant systems grow. They also need to have enough flexibility and elasticity to withstand the forces and movements they are subject to.
Wire mesh
Webnet mesh is also made from stainless-steel wire and comes in a range of aperture sizes, making it suitable for many types of projects. This material is very flexible and malleable as well as having high tensile strength.
In a green facade, stainless-steel mesh can be used as a trellis structure and may be particularly suited for spreading-type plants.
Rods and components
Various other components contribute to the longevity and robustness of a green facade. These include stainless-steel rods ranging in size from 6mm to 24mm, as well as terminators and end-connectors to prevent the fraying of wire rope.
There are also other parts used to connect components together and / or to adjust the tension of wire rope.
Precision engineering is paramount
The use of robust materials is only part of the process though. Precision engineering is required to ensure your green facade performs well under pressure and lasts the distance.
At Tensile, all our green infrastructure projects are engineered to ensure the right materials and methods are used to create a robust and long-lasting project.
